Johan heette na zijn vrijlating Johan Hendrik Bernhard, en was haar achterneef. Maar hij werd geboren in Suriname, en zij groeide op in Sliedrecht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Op 7 september 1844 verleende de Gouverneur-Generaal van Suriname een \u2018Brief van Manumissie\u2019 aan slaaf Johan, tot dan eigendom van <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theokentie.nl\/blog\/index.php\/johan-hendrik-bernhard-plantagedirecteur-en-slavenhouder-in-suriname-1795-1859\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Johan Hendrik Bernhard, de plantagedirecteur<\/a>. Die gaf hem ook zijn naam: Johan Hendrik Bernhard, net als zijn vader, zijn enig bekende grootvader en zijn overgrootvader. Hij werd ook tot (enig) erfgenaam benoemd. Pas vier jaar later kreeg zijn moeder Amelia haar vrijheid. Ze ging Elisabeth Amelia Peto heten. Ze was 16 of 17, toen de plantagedirecteur haar zwanger maakte. Hij liep toen tegen de veertig. Op enig moment moet Amelia met Johan Hendrik Bernhard sr. zijn getrouwd: in september 1859 was ze als weduwe zijn executeur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Paramaribo omstreeks 1860 (G.W.C. In het pand vestigde Johan Hendrik een winkel, waar zo\u2019n beetje alles te koop was. In mei 1862 huwde hij Louisa Lotje Cornelia Jurgen. Vijf jaar later zette hij zijn handtekening onder een steunbetuiging aan een voorstel voor het herzien van in- en uitvoerrechten, ingediend door Cola\u00e7o Belmonte<a id=\"_ednref1\" href=\"#_edn1\">[1]<\/a> in de Koloniale Staten, onderstrepend dat hij tot de middenklasse was gaan behoren<a id=\"_ednref2\" href=\"#_edn2\">[2]<\/a>. Maar in 1867 gaat het kennelijk niet meer zo goed: zijn huis met erf aan de Keizerstraat 139 wordt op 9 april om half negen \u2019s ochtends publiekelijk bij executie te koop aangeboden<a id=\"_ednref3\" href=\"#_edn3\">[3]<\/a>. Die verkoop ging niet door. Op 11 juni 1871 stierf voormalige slaafgemaakte Johan in Paramaribo. Tot de boedel behoorde nog steeds het pand aan de Keizerstraat. Op 16 juni 1873 werd het weer geveild<a id=\"_ednref4\" href=\"#_edn4\">[4]<\/a>. Het zou nu zijn gekocht door W.H.K. Nielo<a id=\"_ednref5\" href=\"#_edn5\">[5]<\/a>.
